Personality: Most of the time, Yukio can be very easily typified as 'the boy next door'. He's a determinedly nice boy, often polite and considerate when dealing with strangers and well-known associates alike so long as they aren't an enemy. He can be relied on to be calm and clearheaded in almost any situation, something that manages to just barely balance out the reckless exuberance of his older brother Rin. While he certainly does have emotions, and does act on them, for the most part Yukio prefers the course of logic and common sense over the whims of the moment, though it can also be said he doesn't have to really indulge in whims and emotional decisions when those choices frequently get made for him by Rin; whether or not he /prefers/ sense, sense tends to go right out the window anyway.

Preferring to observe rather than join in, Yukio's not afraid to speak up if he sees or hears something that strikes him as improper or against the rules, and often serves as a polite reminder to those he travels with as to precisely what their given task is if anyone begins getting sidetracted. His criticism comes in the form of gentle firmness or coercion and usually with a smile. As such, it's not hard to say Yukio's goal oriented, and quite determined at reaching those goals once he sets them for himself. He has very little maintaining a focus on those goals in spite of what's going on around him, and most of the time isn't easily deterred from his chosen path. He enjoys challenges (that don't put others or himself at risk) and tough problems to figure out how to get around, especially ones that test his skills - finding one that meets his standards of 'not particularly dangerous' /and/ 'unlikely to get someone hurt' is fairly rare indeed, but when he finds them he prizes them. He enjoys helping people, be it teaching or otherwise, and is happiest when NOT in command of a situation; he can take orders or give them just as comfortably but being the leader sits uncomfortably with him. He may not show it, but he second-guesses often.

But, goals. He has them, and he works towards them. He knows where he wants to go, and what he wants to do, and this certainty lends him a sort of stability that some people can only dream about. How he ever managed to develop such a rock-solid hold on life in spite of his history is anyone's guess, but it serves him well: he's difficult to provoke into anger save threatening those he cares about, difficult to TRULY shock or alarm (though it's certain he feels these emotions, and more often than he cares for thanks to his beloved brother), or sway him from his baseline of calm, realistic evaluation of situations for very long. Even when one of his students, who had actively betrayed the exorcists, suddenly turned up again in class while his brother was dressed as and imitating said student, he didn't even blink. Control is everything.

That's what he went to school for after all, and he remembers those lessons well. He has to remain levelheaded after all, has to be able to think his way out of any problem and then contend with the side effects, because if he doesn't, if he can't, then he'll never be able to protect his brother. That is perhaps the biggest goal of his life. Certainly he'd be happy to defeat Satan as well, like many exorcists, but his primary goal is keeping his brother alive and if possible (and usually it isn't,) out of trouble. Learning the ins and outs of first aid and emergency medical treatments, primarily to contend with his brother's habit of throwing himself face-first into whatever dangerous thing rolls in. Rin has weaknesses, many of them, and he does his best to balance them out. He has to.

He spends an incredible amount of time maintaining his calm and composure, but now and again he proves to the shock of those around him that not only does he have a temper, it's on a much shorter fuse than he almost always lets on. But it IS possible to provoke him to snapping angrily or taking actively hostile action; Shura and Rin are two who seem to be able to pull this off effortlessly whether or not he likes it. That he bottles his anger right back up as soon as he can isn't really a good thing: where he comes from constantly closing himself off and hiding how he truly feels is an opening for demon possession.

And he feels a lot that he doesn't show. He hates his brother /almost/ as much as he loves him; Rin is his twin and he wants to protect him above nearly all else, but he hasn't forgotten it's that same brother that not only killed their adopted father and mentor, but inherited the very power that slaughtered countless people in the Blue Night. Inherited that power, and accepted it, embraced it, and intends to use it actively, as if grinding Shiro's sacrifice into the ground. Yukio hasn't forgotten it and hasn't forgiven it ... but his brother is still his brother, and is still cared for intensely. He'll fight for his brother's safety and survival as tenaciously as anyone might a sibling, but it comes tinged with resentment and anger. In truth, the one he hates the most is himself. He wasn't strong enough to inherit Satan's power, and later wasn't strong enough to save Shiro. And now ... now even with a double mastery of Doctor and Dragoon, that might not be enough to save his brother! His brother, who happily throws himself at any danger that happens to cross his path--!! But most of all, he loathes himself because he knows, knows absolutely, that Rin doesn't deserve his resentment and anger. It wasn't his fault, not really. Any hurt teen snaps at authority figures. Every teen rebels sooner or later. And Rin was just making the best out of what he had been dealt..

But Yukio has a hard time forgetting, and forgiving.

Friends! He doens't ... really have any, beyond Shiemi, whom he has a crush on, and his brother .. sort of. It's a lonely life, one he'd willingly sacrificed in order to become an exorcist and be able to protect Rin, but it leaves him frequently on the outside looking in while others make friends and form bonds and have fun. He's the Instructor, his job is to keep his distance. And he does, to such a degree where it seems to deeply trouble Shiemi, a girl he's known and been fond of for a very long time. In her at least he has a friend, one he trusts and thinks can be relied on (in certain areas anyway), but even there Rin seems to get the best of him - ever since declaring his intentions towards Shiemi very loudly in a certain bathhouse, Yukio's deliberately put distance between them. If Rin cared for her the same way he did, well. He's not going to get in the way.
